The salary of architects in Switzerland depends significantly on the canton. The highest average wages are paid in Schwyz, Zug and Schaffhausen, where a strong construction industry and high cost of living lead to above-average salaries. Wages are noticeably lower in Thurgau, Ticino and Geneva, which is partly due to regional differences in demand and the competitive situation. Education and professional experience also have a noticeable effect on earnings: those with a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university generally earn significantly more than those without relevant training. As professional experience grows, so does responsibility, for example in managing larger construction projects, which also has a positive effect on salary. There is a noticeable pay gap between genders in this profession: male architects earn on average CHF 76,356 gross per year, noticeably more than their female colleagues.
Architects develop designs for buildings and structures and accompany their realization from the initial idea to final inspection. Their tasks include planning floor plans and building construction, coordinating with clients, authorities and specialist planners, as well as monitoring construction execution in terms of quality, costs and schedules. During their studies, aspiring architects often specialize in specific areas such as building construction, interior design, heritage preservation or sustainable building. These focus areas often shape their later professional direction, for example in the renovation of historic buildings or the development of energy-efficient new constructions. Architects in Switzerland are employed mainly in private planning and architecture firms, at real estate companies, in municipal and cantonal building authorities, and increasingly also in self-employment with their own architecture firm.
