Which health insurance is the right one?

There is no general answer to this question because it depends, among other things, on your life circumstances and your wishes. Do you live in Germany and work in Switzerland, or have you decided to move to Switzerland? It would help if you had health insurance. Still, the rules for cross-border commuters are entirely different from those for emigrants.

What you need

In principle, you are required to have health insurance in Switzerland. Registration is mandatory if you:

  • live in Switzerland
  • have immigrated to Switzerland

What is certain is that as an immigrant in Switzerland, you must have primary insurance. Border crossers have further options. However, suppose you decide to take out a German insurance policy, for example. In that case, you must be exempted from compulsory insurance in Switzerland. Suppose you do not complete and submit this form. In that case, you will automatically be insured in Switzerland after three months at the latest.

What you can do

Cross-border commuters have the option of remaining insured in Germany. You can choose between three insurance options:

  • Basic Insurance in Switzerland (KVG)
  • Statutory Health Insurance in Germany (GVK)
  • Private health insurance in Germany (PKV)

The decisive factor is which insurance is the right one for you. In the following chapters, you will find answers to many questions. We explain the differences, show you the possibilities and give you essential tips to save a lot of money and time in the short and long term, and cover the most critical risks.
