Net salary in Switzerland: frequently asked questions

Figures for 2026. Net amounts are calculated with our salary calculator for a single person aged 30 without children and without church tax.

The median full-time salary in Switzerland is CHF 7,024 gross a month (Federal Statistical Office, 2024 wage survey). In 2026 a single person aged 30 without children takes home about CHF 5,546 net in Zurich, CHF 5,279 in Geneva and CHF 5,831 in Zug, after social security, pension fund and withholding tax. Health insurance is not deducted from pay and comes on top. Enter your own details in the salary calculator above.

At the median salary of CHF 7,024 gross, a single employee keeps between 74 and 83 percent in 2026 in the cantons we compared: about CHF 5,831 net in Zug, CHF 5,546 in Zurich, CHF 5,249 in Basel-Stadt and CHF 5,218 in Vaud. Everyone pays 5.3 percent for AHV/IV/EO and 1.1 percent for unemployment insurance plus the pension fund; the withholding tax is what differs from canton to canton.

In the canton of Zurich, a single person aged 30 without children takes home about CHF 6,229 a month in 2026 on a gross salary of CHF 8,000, CHF 4,821 on CHF 6,000 and CHF 7,557 on CHF 10,000. At CHF 8,000 the withholding tax rate is 8.66 percent, clearly lower than in Basel-Stadt (13.06 percent) or Geneva (12.94 percent). Married people and parents pay less; the calculator above shows your case.

That depends on your spending, but the fixed costs for 2026 are known. The average rent for a 2-room flat in the canton of Zurich is CHF 1,510 (existing leases, 2024) and the average adult health insurance premium CHF 451.60 a month. On CHF 6,000 gross a single person keeps about CHF 4,821 net, leaving roughly CHF 2,860 after rent and insurance; on CHF 8,000 about CHF 4,270 remain. The median in the Zurich region is CHF 7,502.

The median full-time salary in Northwest Switzerland, which includes Basel, is CHF 7,156 gross a month. On the Swiss median of CHF 7,024, a single expat aged 30 keeps about CHF 5,249 net in Basel-Stadt in 2026, after social security, pension fund and around 12 percent withholding tax. The average adult health insurance premium there is CHF 545.10, so about CHF 4,700 remain before rent; a 2-room flat averages CHF 1,201.

Salaries are higher and taxes lower in Zurich; rents on existing leases are lower in Geneva. The 2024 median is CHF 7,502 a month in the Zurich region and CHF 6,998 in the Lake Geneva region. On CHF 8,000 gross a single person keeps about CHF 6,229 net in Zurich and CHF 5,887 in Geneva in 2026. A 2-room flat averages CHF 1,510 in Zurich and CHF 1,218 in Geneva; health insurance averages CHF 451.60 against CHF 586.

Compare it with two 2026 benchmarks: the median full-time salary in the Zurich region is CHF 7,502 gross a month, and our wages pages show the range for your occupation by canton. Then look at what is left: on CHF 8,000 gross a single person keeps about CHF 6,229 net, and after an average 2-room rent of CHF 1,510 and health insurance of CHF 451.60 around CHF 4,270 remain. Also ask whether a 13th salary is paid.

It depends on your work canton. In Bern, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Solothurn, Vaud, Valais, Neuchâtel and Jura you pay no Swiss withholding tax if you hand in the French certificate of residence; you are taxed in France, which pays 4.5 percent of your gross salary to the canton. In Geneva, Zurich and all other cantons, Swiss withholding tax is deducted. Swiss social security applies in 2026 either way, and you have three months to choose Swiss or French health insurance.
