The salary of assistant doctors is largely determined by cantonal collective agreements and hospital regulations, leading to noticeable differences between cantons. The size and type of hospital also play a role, as university hospitals and larger centers tend to pay somewhat higher salaries than smaller regional hospitals. Professional experience, or the year of further training, also has a direct impact on earnings, since salary typically rises automatically with each additional year of training. In addition, the number of shifts worked, particularly night, weekend, and on-call duty, as well as the chosen specialty, influence the overall income.
Assistant doctors are undergoing further training toward a specialist title and work under the supervision of experienced specialists and senior physicians in hospitals and clinics. Their tasks include examining and caring for patients, making diagnoses, performing medical procedures, and documenting treatment progress. Depending on their specialty, they rotate through various departments to gain practical experience in different medical fields. The profession is characterized by irregular working hours, night and weekend duty, and high professional and emotional demands, but at the same time offers thorough clinical training on the path to independent medical practice.
