The salary of booksellers in Switzerland is shaped by several factors. Professionals in the cantons of Aargau, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Zug tend to earn particularly well, while wages in Lucerne, Ticino and Bern are generally lower. Qualifications also play a role: those with a university of applied sciences background can typically achieve significantly higher salaries than people with traditional vocational training. Earning potential rises with growing professional experience and responsibility, for instance by taking on branch management or specialising in a particular range of books. The size and orientation of the bookshop, for example a large chain compared with an owner-run bookshop, also affects the salary level.
Booksellers advise customers on books, magazines and other media and are responsible for sales as well as presenting the range in the bookshop.
