The salary of bricklayers in Switzerland is significantly influenced by the canton, professional experience and qualifications. Relatively high salaries are paid in the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Ticino and Lucerne, while pay tends to be lower in Bern. Earnings increase noticeably with growing professional experience, as physically demanding and more responsible tasks on the construction site are taken on with practice. A higher qualification, such as further training as a foreman or site supervisor, also has a positive effect on salary. There are only minor differences in pay between men and women in the bricklaying profession.
Bricklayers are responsible on construction sites for building masonry, concrete structures and shell construction. Their tasks include laying walls, installing reinforcement, producing and processing concrete, and building foundations and basement structures. They read construction plans, work with construction machinery, and ensure that buildings are erected in a stable, safe manner according to specifications. The profession requires physical fitness, manual skill, and teamwork, as bricklayers usually work in teams on changing construction sites. Entry is typically through a three-year apprenticeship as a bricklayer (EFZ), with further training opportunities to foreman or site supervisor.
