The salary of a call centre agent in Switzerland depends above all on the canton and the area of work. Pay is best in Zurich, Basel-Stadt and Aargau, while earnings are lower in Nidwalden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Fribourg. The type of activity also plays a role: those working in sales or active customer advice can often earn more through commissions than in pure support. Salaries can be increased with growing professional experience and additional qualifications, for instance in communication or sales technique. Between the genders the difference in average pay is only slight.
Call centre agents work in virtually every sector of the economy, usually in call centres or in larger companies with their own customer service department. In customer service and support they take calls, provide information, answer questions and coordinate customer requests. In sales they actively contact customers and offer them products or services. Depending on the area of deployment the duties differ markedly, but communication skill, patience and resilience are always required, since the work is often done under time pressure and with constantly changing requests.
