The salary of a lead fitter depends above all on professional experience, technical specialisation and the size of the teams led. Earnings rise markedly with growing experience and responsibility, as the figures for older and more experienced specialists show in particular. Education also plays a role: those with training from a university of applied sciences or an in-depth vocational qualification can earn above average. Regional differences are apparent as well, with salaries in cantons such as Thurgau or Zurich lying above the average, while they tend to be lower in more rural regions. The sector additionally influences pay, since plant construction or building services engineering often pay more than other areas of assembly work.
A lead fitter heads assembly teams on construction sites or in production and carries both the technical and the organisational responsibility for assembly work being carried out on time and to standard. The duties include allocating work to and leading the assembly staff, coordinating with clients and other trades, and checking the quality of the work performed. Lead fitters generally have a sound basic technical training as well as several years of assembly experience. Depending on the sector, the field of work ranges from plant construction through electrical and sanitary engineering to façade or steel construction. Alongside practical skill, leadership qualities and organisational ability are central requirements of this position.
