The salary of draftsmen in Switzerland is significantly influenced by canton, professional experience and qualification. The highest wages are paid in the cantons of Ticino, Basel-Stadt and Geneva, while salaries in Basel-Landschaft and Uri tend to be lower. Income increases noticeably with growing professional experience, as routine in working with CAD software and construction plans is highly valued. Qualification also plays a role: those who have completed further training at a university of applied sciences generally earn more than those with a traditional vocational apprenticeship. There is only a small pay gap between genders in this profession.
Draftsmen create technical drawings and plans for construction projects in both building and civil engineering. Using CAD software, they translate the specifications of architects and civil engineers into scaled construction plans, detail drawings and execution plans. Their responsibilities also include revising plans based on feedback, documenting building measurements, and coordinating with engineers, architects and construction site staff. Draftsmen are employed in architecture and engineering firms, construction companies, and public building authorities. Entry into the profession is usually through a vocational apprenticeship as a draftsman, with additional qualifications such as further training at a university of applied sciences opening up career advancement opportunities, for example toward project management.
