The salary of a driver in Switzerland differs according to canton and type of vehicle. Pay is best in Zurich, St. Gallen and Graubünden, while Bern, Basel-Stadt and Schwyz are rather at the lower end. The type of work also plays a role: those driving heavy lorries or special vehicles generally earn more than on simple delivery runs. With growing professional experience and appropriate further training, for instance in logistics or the transport of dangerous goods, earnings rise noticeably. Between the genders the difference in average pay is only slight.
Drivers transport people, wares or goods using a range of vehicles such as delivery vans, lorries or small transporters. Their duties include the safe and punctual delivery of goods, planning routes, checking the load and looking after and servicing the vehicle. Depending on the area of work – parcel delivery, in-house transport or long-distance haulage – requirements and earnings can differ markedly. The occupation calls for reliability, a sense of responsibility and physical resilience, since the work is often done under time pressure and in varying weather conditions.
