The salary of a compulsory-school teacher in Switzerland is governed above all by cantonal pay scales, which differ from canton to canton. The largest salary differences are therefore regional: while cantons such as Thurgau pay above-average salaries, earning prospects in cantons such as St. Gallen or Zurich are rather below average. Professional experience and level of education also play a role, since automatic pay grades are often reached as experience grows. The workload additionally influences earnings, as many teachers work part time. The data show a perceptible difference between the genders, linked among other things to differing workloads and levels of experience.
Compulsory-school teachers teach children and young people during the years of compulsory schooling, from primary level to lower secondary. They convey basic knowledge in subjects such as language, mathematics, natural science and social studies, fostering both academic and social skills.
