The salary of floor layers in Switzerland depends on several factors. The place of work plays a central role: in the cantons of Schwyz and Zug, above-average wages are paid, while lower salaries are more common in Bern and Basel-Stadt.
Professional experience also has a noticeable effect on earnings, with income generally rising as practical experience increases. Qualifications also influence salary: those who have completed a vocational apprenticeship or further training at a university of applied sciences can expect higher pay than unskilled workers. Company size and proximity to economically strong centers such as Zurich or Zug also have a positive effect on wage levels.
Floor layers are specialists in the professional installation and maintenance of all types of flooring. Their tasks include preparing and leveling subfloors, cutting and laying parquet, laminate, carpet, linoleum, or elastic floor coverings, as well as properly gluing and welding the materials.
In addition to manual skill, a good eye for precision is required, since joints and transitions must be executed exactly. Floor layers work both on new construction and renovation projects, in private households as well as in commercial and industrial buildings. In Switzerland, the profession is traditionally learned through a vocational apprenticeship (EFZ), and skilled workers can specialize further through continuing education, for example as a foreman or project manager.
