The salary of a head of finance in Switzerland depends heavily on professional experience and technical qualification: as experience grows, heads of finance take on larger areas of responsibility and budgets, which has a direct effect on earnings. Education also plays a role, with a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university usually leading to higher pay than a vocational apprenticeship alone. The place of work influences earnings markedly too: in cantons such as Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn salaries lie above the Swiss average, while in Bern and Zurich they come out comparatively lower. Company size has an additional effect, as larger firms with more complex financial structures pay experienced heads of finance considerably more than smaller businesses.
Heads of finance carry overall responsibility for a company's financial affairs and generally lead their own team covering accounting, controlling and financial planning. Their core duties include preparing budgets and financial forecasts, monitoring liquidity, reporting to management and the board, and identifying potential savings and efficiency gains. They ensure that statutory requirements and internal guidelines are complied with and work closely with external auditors, banks and tax authorities. In larger companies, heads of finance are frequently part of the extended management team and are substantially involved in strategic decisions. The route into this position usually leads through commercial or business training, supplemented by several years of accounting experience and further education such as the federal certificate in finance and accounting or a degree in business administration.
