Factors influencing the salary

The salary of a head of purchasing in Switzerland is largely determined by professional experience and technical qualification: people with a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university earn considerably more than those with a vocational apprenticeship alone. Age also plays an important role, since larger procurement volumes and more complex supplier relationships are taken on as experience grows. The place of work influences earnings too: in cantons such as Bern, Schwyz and Vaud salaries lie above the Swiss average, while in Aargau and Thurgau they tend to be lower. Company size has an additional effect, as larger firms with extensive procurement structures usually pay experienced heads of purchasing more than smaller businesses.

Job profile & responsibilities

Heads of purchasing are responsible for the strategic and operational procurement of goods and services for a company. They develop purchasing strategies, negotiate framework agreements with suppliers, monitor delivery times, quality and costs and continuously optimise the supply chain. Their duties also include leading a purchasing team, working together with production, logistics and finance, and selecting and assessing new suppliers with sustainability and risk criteria in mind. In Switzerland, heads of purchasing work above all in industrial companies, in retail and in larger service businesses, where efficient procurement makes a substantial contribution to commercial success. The route into this management position usually leads through commercial or technical basic training, supplemented by several years of purchasing experience and further education in supply chain management or business administration.
