Earnings as an IT support specialist in Switzerland are shaped above all by education and accumulated professional experience: those with training from a university of applied sciences earn considerably more on average than people without a relevant qualification. Age and the associated years of practice also have a positive effect on pay, since experienced support staff can resolve more complex enquiries independently. The place of work plays a role as well: in cantons such as Graubünden, Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn salaries lie above the Swiss average, while in Bern and Basel-Stadt they tend to be lower. Company size additionally influences earnings, as larger firms with more complex IT infrastructures often pay experienced support staff more than smaller businesses.
IT support specialists are the first port of call when staff in a company have technical problems with computers, software or networks. They take enquiries through ticketing systems, by telephone or in person, analyse the cause of the fault and either resolve the problem directly or pass it on to specialist units. Typical duties include installing and configuring workstations, managing user accounts, setting up printers and mobile devices and maintaining the IT documentation. IT support specialists work in virtually every sector, from small businesses to large corporations with their own IT department, frequently in a team with systems administrators and network technicians. Entry is usually via an apprenticeship as an IT specialist or a comparable technical training; career changers with practical IT experience also find good opportunities in this field, particularly if they keep training in new technologies.
