The salary of lawyers in Switzerland strongly depends on the canton, professional experience and area of specialisation. Professionals in the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Lucerne and Bern tend to earn particularly well, while wages in Basel-Stadt, Geneva and St. Gallen are generally lower. Qualifications also play an important role: a completed law degree together with the bar admission has a clearly positive effect on earnings. Earning potential rises significantly with growing professional experience and responsibility, for instance by becoming a partner at a law firm or specialising in an in-demand area of law such as commercial law. The size and orientation of the law firm, for example an international commercial firm compared with a smaller practice, also affects the achievable salary.
Lawyers represent and advise their clients on legal matters. Their duties include drafting contracts, supporting real estate transactions, and representing clients before courts and authorities. Their clients include both private individuals and companies and organisations. In Switzerland, lawyers are also referred to as Advokat/in or Fürsprecher/in. They typically work at law firms, auditing companies, or in the legal department of a company.
