Mechanical draftsmen in Switzerland earn on average a gross annual salary of around CHF 62,982, which corresponds to a monthly salary of about CHF 5,249. Earnings vary considerably depending on canton, age and professional experience: significantly higher wages are paid in Basel-Stadt, Zurich and Lucerne, while compensation in St. Gallen and other cantons tends to be lower. With an average of around 17 years of professional experience, this profession is among the more experienced technical drafting roles, which has a positive effect on salary. The influence of qualification is particularly clear: those who complete further training at a university of applied sciences or university earn markedly more than those with a traditional vocational apprenticeship. There is also a clear gender pay gap in favor of male professionals, partly related to the distribution across higher-qualified and better-paid positions.
Mechanical draftsmen create technical drawings and construction plans for machines, plants and mechanical components. Based on specifications from designers and engineers, they translate part and assembly drawings using CAD software, precisely defining dimensions, tolerances, materials and manufacturing notes. Their responsibilities also include maintaining parts lists, creating 3D models, and adapting existing design documents as products are further developed. Unlike draftsmen who work on building and civil engineering projects, mechanical draftsmen focus on mechanical engineering and manufacturing technology. They work mainly in industrial companies, mechanical engineering firms and engineering offices, staying in close contact with design, production and quality assurance teams. Entry into the profession is usually through a technical vocational apprenticeship, while a further qualification at a university of applied sciences opens up additional career opportunities.
