The salary of a midwife in Switzerland is shaped by several factors: workplace location plays a role, as earning potential varies by canton – it tends to be highest in Uri, Thurgau and St. Gallen, while Bern, Lucerne and Basel-Stadt see lower figures. Work experience and qualifications, such as a degree from a university of applied sciences or university in midwifery, also affect pay. Other influencing factors include the level of employment, the type of employment – whether in a clinic, private practice, or self-employed – and the share of on-call and night shifts.
Midwives work in the healthcare sector and support women throughout pregnancy. They run prenatal preparation courses, attend births – either as part of a clinical team or independently, for example at home births – and support mothers through the end of the breastfeeding period. Midwives work in hospitals, birthing centers, medical practices, or on a self-employed basis. The profession requires a high level of responsibility, solid medical knowledge, and empathetic communication with the women they support and their families.
