The salary of an occupational therapist in Switzerland is shaped by several factors: workplace location plays an important role, as earning potential varies noticeably by canton – it tends to be highest in Ticino, Obwalden and Nidwalden, while Graubünden, St. Gallen and Zug see lower figures. Work experience and qualifications, such as a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university, also influence pay. Other factors include the level of employment, the work setting – whether hospital, rehabilitation clinic or private practice – and the specific treatment focus, such as pediatrics or geriatrics.
Occupational therapists help people regain or maintain independence in daily life when it has been limited by illness, injury or disability. They develop individual therapy plans, train motor and cognitive skills, and advise on assistive devices as well as adapting living and working environments. Occupational therapists work in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, nursing homes and their own practices, treating patients of all ages, from children to the elderly.
