The salary of pilots (first officer) in Switzerland is significantly influenced by canton, professional experience and qualification. The cantons of Thurgau, Basel-Stadt and Geneva pay the highest wages, while compensation in more rural regions tends to be lower. Earnings increase noticeably with growing professional experience and age, as more responsibility is taken on in the cockpit. Qualification also plays an important role: pilots with a university degree tend to earn more than those with a degree from a university of applied sciences.
Pilots (first officer) work as co-pilots in the cockpit of commercial aircraft, supporting the captain in safely carrying out the flight. Their duties include flight preparation and planning, monitoring onboard systems, communicating with air traffic control, and taking over the controls in coordination with the captain. They share responsibility for the safety of passengers and crew. A prerequisite for the role is completed pilot training with an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) as well as a type rating for the relevant aircraft type.
