Factors influencing the salary

The salary of project management staff in Switzerland depends heavily on professional experience: as practice grows, employees take on more responsibility within projects and can achieve higher pay. Education also plays a role, with a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university tending to lead to higher salaries than a vocational apprenticeship alone. The place of work influences earnings markedly too: in cantons such as Basel-Landschaft, Vaud and Zug salaries lie above the Swiss average, while in Thurgau and St. Gallen they tend to be lower. The sector has an additional effect, as companies with complex, technically demanding projects often pay experienced project staff more than businesses with simpler project structures.

Job profile & responsibilities

Project management staff support the planning, execution and monitoring of projects within a company. They assist with scheduling, maintain project documentation, prepare status reports and presentations and coordinate communication between the various parties involved. Their duties also include monitoring budgets and resources and supporting the project lead in identifying and resolving problems during implementation. Depending on the company and sector they work on internal organisational projects, IT initiatives or client projects, gaining hands-on experience in professional project management. In Switzerland such positions are found in virtually every branch, from industry and services through to public administration. Entry is usually via commercial or technical basic training, frequently supplemented by initial experience in project teams and further education in project management according to recognised methods such as IPMA or PMI.
