The salary of senior physicians in Switzerland is significantly influenced by canton, professional experience and qualification. The cantons of Bern, Schwyz and Lucerne pay the highest wages, while compensation in more rural regions tends to be lower. Earnings increase noticeably with growing professional experience and age, as more responsibility for patient care and department leadership is taken on. Qualification also plays an important role: senior physicians with a university degree earn more than those with a degree from a university of applied sciences. There is a noticeable pay gap in this profession in favor of men.
Senior physicians in hospitals and clinics carry medical responsibility for the care of their patients and lead a team of resident and attending physicians. Their duties include making diagnoses, defining and monitoring treatment plans, performing examinations and procedures, and working closely with chief physicians and other specialist departments. They also take on organizational tasks such as shift scheduling and contribute to the training and continuing education of junior medical staff. A prerequisite for working as a senior physician is a completed medical degree followed by specialist medical training, along with several years of clinical experience.
