The salary of shoemakers in Switzerland depends heavily on canton, age and professional experience. Particularly high wages are earned in the cantons of Aargau, Thurgau and Bern, while wages in Solothurn and Zurich tend to be lower. Income rises noticeably with growing professional experience: career starters earn significantly less than experienced professionals with several decades of practice. Qualification also plays an important role, with a university degree opening up the highest earning opportunities. There is also a clear pay gap between genders in favor of male professionals.
Shoemakers produce made-to-measure shoes and repair damaged footwear. They work mainly in small craft workshops or their own shops, where in addition to repair work they also sell products related to shoes and leather care. Direct interaction with customers is part of their daily work: they advise on fit, materials and shoe care. Besides classic shoemaking workshops, shoemakers also find employment in orthopedic workshops, where they make individually adapted shoes for medical purposes, as well as in theaters, where they produce shoes for stage productions.
