The salary of a social worker in Switzerland varies according to canton, employer and field of activity. Pay is best in Thurgau, Lucerne and Schaffhausen, while earning prospects tend to be lower in Ticino, Obwalden and Graubünden. The field of work also plays an important role: those working in child and youth welfare, addiction counselling or social psychiatry can earn differently depending on their specialisation. With growing professional experience and additional training, for instance at a university of applied sciences or a university, earnings rise noticeably. Between the genders the difference in average pay is only slight.
Social workers support people in difficult life situations and accompany them in coping with social, family or financial problems. They work in child and youth welfare, addiction counselling, community work, municipal social services or institutions for adult support, among others.
