The salary of flight attendants in Switzerland is significantly influenced by canton, professional experience and qualification. Comparatively high wages are paid in the cantons of Aargau and Lucerne, while compensation in Zug, Valais and Zurich tends to be lower. As this is a typical entry-level profession, average professional experience is low, but it has a clear effect on earnings: income rises noticeably with increasing flight experience and seniority. Qualification also plays a role, as applicants with a vocational baccalaureate or Matura tend to receive better starting conditions than those with general training. There is also a pay gap between genders, partly due to differences in experience levels.
Flight attendants, also known as cabin crew, are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of passengers on board commercial aircraft. Their duties include welcoming and caring for passengers, conducting the safety briefing, and serving food and drinks during the flight. In an emergency, they are responsible for evacuation and first-aid measures and must be trained to respond accordingly. The profession requires strong communication skills, resilience and enjoyment of interacting with people from all kinds of backgrounds, since irregular working hours, time zone changes and longer stays abroad are part of everyday work. Entry is usually through company-internal training at an airline, while good foreign language skills and a well-groomed appearance are basic requirements. With growing experience, career advancement opportunities open up, for example to purser or chief flight attendant.
