The salary of tailors in Switzerland is significantly influenced by canton, professional experience and qualification. The highest wages are paid in the cantons of Zug, Graubünden and Thurgau, while salaries in Zurich and Aargau tend to be lower. Income increases noticeably with growing professional experience, as craftsmanship and routine in made-to-measure work are highly valued. Qualification also plays a role: those with a degree from a university of applied sciences in the textile field generally earn more than those with a traditional vocational apprenticeship. There is also a noticeable pay gap between genders, partly due to differences in experience levels and fields of employment.
Tailors design, produce and alter made-to-measure clothing for their clients. They take body measurements, select suitable fabrics and materials, and turn patterns into finished garments. In addition to creating new pieces, alterations and repairs are also part of their daily work, such as adjusting garments to an individual's figure. Tailors are employed mainly in tailor shops, ateliers and fashion studios, but also in theaters, television productions and fashion houses, where they create costumes and collection pieces. Training is usually completed through a vocational apprenticeship, with higher qualifications opening up additional career and earning opportunities.
