The salary of tilers in Switzerland depends heavily on canton. The highest average wages are paid in Geneva, Thurgau and Zurich, while compensation in Zug, St. Gallen and Lucerne tends to be lower. These regional differences reflect, among other things, differing costs of living and local demand for skilled workers in the interior construction trade. Education and professional experience also clearly influence earnings: those with a higher educational qualification such as a vocational baccalaureate or Matura earn on average noticeably more than those without relevant training. As professional experience grows, tilers also take on more demanding work, which likewise has a positive effect on salary. There is a relatively small pay gap between genders in this profession: women earn on average CHF 64,615 gross per year, men CHF 62,294.
Tilers install floor and wall coverings made of tiles, ceramics and natural stone in new buildings as well as during renovations. Their tasks include preparing and leveling the substrate, precisely cutting and laying the tiles, and grouting and waterproofing wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens. Training in Switzerland is usually completed through basic vocational training (EFZ) as a tiler, with a focus on manual skill, material knowledge and precision. With growing experience, many tilers also take on more demanding work such as mosaic installation or the design of individual floor patterns. Tilers are employed mainly in construction companies, specialized tiling firms and the interior finishing trade. With sufficient experience, there is also the possibility of becoming self-employed or taking on a foreman or site management role.
