Veterinarians in Switzerland earn on average a gross annual salary of around CHF 111,107, which corresponds to a monthly salary of about CHF 9,259. Earnings vary depending on canton, qualification and professional experience: the highest wages are paid in Fribourg, Thurgau and Basel-Landschaft, while compensation in Schaffhausen tends to be lower. With a degree in veterinary medicine as a basic requirement, growing professional experience and specialization through continuing education lead to higher salaries. Veterinarians with more than ten years of professional experience earn on average significantly more than career starters. There is also a clear gender difference: men earn on average around CHF 123,165 per year, noticeably more than their female colleagues.
Veterinarians take care of the health of animals: they make diagnoses, treat illnesses, perform surgeries and advise owners on care, nutrition and prevention. The field is broad, ranging from small animal medicine to large and farm animal practice, as well as specialized areas such as surgery, dentistry or reproductive medicine. Depending on the chosen focus, everyday work looks very different: in a small animal practice, consultations and surgeries are the main focus, while large animal veterinarians are often deployed directly on farms. Some veterinarians also work as official inspectors for authorities, in food safety, in the pharmaceutical industry and research, or internationally for organizations in the field of animal health. A basic requirement for practicing the profession independently is a completed degree in veterinary medicine along with the corresponding professional license.
