Zookeepers in Switzerland earn on average a gross annual salary of around CHF 57,966, which corresponds to a monthly salary of about CHF 4,831. Earnings vary depending on canton, qualification and professional experience: the highest wages are paid in Bern, while compensation in Solothurn and Aargau tends to be lower. A completed vocational apprenticeship has a clearly positive effect on salary: those without formal training earn noticeably less on average than zookeepers with a completed apprenticeship. Growing professional experience and specialization, for example in handling certain animal species, can also increase earnings. There is also a difference by gender: men earn on average around CHF 56,946 per year.
Zookeepers are responsible for the daily care, husbandry and welfare of animals. This includes feeding, cleaning enclosures and cages, observing the animals' health, and assisting with veterinary treatments. Depending on their workplace, they care for pets, farm animals, zoo animals or laboratory animals. Zookeepers work in animal shelters, zoos, veterinary practices, research institutions or on farms, among other places. Daily work requires physical stamina, empathy in handling animals, and willingness to work irregular hours, since animals also need care on weekends and holidays. Entry into the profession is usually through basic vocational training, in Switzerland for example the apprenticeship as a specialist in animal care (Fachfrau/Fachmann Betreuung Fachrichtung Tiere). Those who pursue further training or acquire additional qualifications, for example in veterinary medicine or animal behavior, can open up further career opportunities.
